˙ţGlobal Warming Webquest Helps Define Issue

from: Ancient Hippy

Used as an educational tool, a global warming webquest can be helpful in not only teaching the facts surrounding the global warming debate, but also help develop an opinion on the fact or fallacy of global warming. With the hotly divided issue being debated on two main fronts, using a global warming webquest to help formulate an educated opinion can help separate the facts from theory.

When many nations signed what is called the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement by many countries to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, three main countries, the United States, China and India have steadfastly refused on the belief that the costs of reducing the emissions far outweigh the results, which are based on what they term questionable and unproven theories. These countries, guided by many industries supposedly responsible for the emissions, use global warming webquest presentations to support their opinion that the facts do not support the theory enough to justify the cost.

Developed by educators and scientists, a global warming webquest can help students and others sort through the information available in order to determine which side of the debate appears to be the most right. Facts are presented in order to present a more informed reasoning behind their presentation.

Need Pertinent Information To Form Opinion

By having students as young as in the fourth grade begin looking at the environmental issues, proponents hope they can raise the environmental consciousness of the youth. Some scientists, however say the information included in the global warming webquest is tilted toward one view and leaves out information needed for an honest opinion to be developed. By slanting the information, a non-judgmental theory cannot be reached, is their accusation.

One of the most recent global warming webquest projects selects players for a game of political advisers, asked for information on global warming by a newly elected fantasy president. Their charge is to review available research on global warming and offer the president a recommendation on how to move on the issue. Part of the game also involves the group writing a short press release outlining the opinion and offer facts as to how the opinion was reached.

In their presentation to the president, they must not only offer an opinion, but also must provide information on why and have supporting documentation for each point of the opinion. This global warming webquest cannot only help individuals determine their position on the debate, but may also open doors to previously unthought-of of theories.
